"In 1991, after 21 years on the job with California's Oakland Police Department, 44 year-old Keith Carlen was a runner-up in the local police union's vote for 'Officer Of The Year.'
On April 17, 1992, Police Department spokesmen announced that Keith Carlen had confessed to murdering his wife. He had planned the killing. The motive was money. Carlen opted for homicide as a means to curb his wife's spending.
On Thursday, December 15, 1993, jurors deliberated three hours before convicting Carlen of first-degree murder
.On October 25th, 1995, Carlen was sentenced drawing a prison term of 25 years to life. A California state appeals court upheld his conviction on November 22, 1996."

his former wife
9.9.2016. Keith was a neighbor and a friend as was Carol. It was impossible to believe back then and still is. We always thought he took the fall for his son (who we never met) Is Keith still in prison?
Yes keith is still in jail. His son was in Texas I am his former wife. He has admitted to me what happened with Carol. There are things no one knew. His family and children were not welcome and Carol controlled all speading. Keith would have to go in the garage to call him own kids as it infuriated Carol. Gifts were never allowed for Christmas or birthdays. Kace as we called him adored Christmas. Not being allowed to acknowledge his kids hurt him. He and I were friends and talked often while he was in the garage. I have visited him in prison with my husband and Kaces grandson. His kids have nothing to do with him. He let them down to avoid Carols wrath. You are welcome to email mail. marcellosmama@yahoo.com. I would love to hear what you knew.
Carol is my aunt. There is no reason to talk bad about my aunt. She was murdered and he had no right to take her life. I would set the record straight, but unlike you I won’t share others dirty laundry. My grandparents were devastated and it broke them. They lived the rest of their lives in pain of losing their daughter. Keith can rot in prison for all I care.

So terribly sorry for your loss! Still no clue why he killed Carol instead of getting a divorce. I cannot imagine her parents pain. I do know his mother’s pain and his children’s. Hugs to everyone who he destroyed with this.

I went to Oakland High with Keith. His sister Eileen and I were good friends. I lost touch with Eileen and Keith before his motorcycle accident. However the person I knew in the 1970s-1980s didn't have a mean streak at all.
I was in prison with Keith. He had been (down) in prison for 20 years by then. My over all impression of Keith is he has a good heart. A great guy that did something terrible. I often played cribbage with him. He opened up to me and said some of his story. Not that common in prison, but we did relate. I spent a years and a half with him. I could see how he thinks, processing, etc. I’m very straight forward and we didn’t always agree on our opinions. I still stand by my opinion of Kieth.
My family are police, former and retired. One family member worked directly with him on the Oakland force. He couldn’t believe what happen back then. We had a conversation about him a few weeks ago.
